Q:Which type of club or which club do you recommend students to join？
Ahh that’s easy! Whatever matches their interest! I speak to a lot of students who think they should join clubs like the debate club or the math club because they’re more serious or professional, and while those are amazing clubs that’s not how I think about this. Club time is a time for students to have fun while growing and I think that if you join any club that matches your interest you’ll put a lot of effort it and grow as a person - no matter if that’s through the chemistry club or the watercolour club.
Q:What do you think of club?
First, I see clubs as an opportunity to escape the normal day at school. From 8:00-4:10 students are extremely focused on their classes or worrying about the next quiz. I hope clubs can be a bit of an escape from this, a chance to forget about problems for a while as you play tennis, smash some drums or dive deeper into your favourite subject.
I also see clubs as a great way to meet similar people to you at our school. There’s not many opportunities for a G1 student to mix with an A2 student, but clubs is a perfect chance for this. You both have a shared interest to do together and I hope we can make friends outside of our class bubbles.
Lastly, I can’t ignore the importance of clubs for a student’s development and their university application. Competition for entrance to the top universities is extremely fierce and clubs provide a way for students to stand out. A lot of people get four A* grades, but how many of them successfully led a motorsport club at the same time? How many people taught others how to do Chinese calligraphy or to perform stand up comedy? These applications are the ones that stand out and our club program hopefully gives students the stage to prove themselves.”
